FAQ
You can choose to meet weekly or biweekly. I encourage weekly sessions, at least initially, because consistency is essential for establishing trust, emotional safety, and a therapeutic alliance that nurtures healing and growth. In time, you will develop greater insight into your challenges, acquire tools for emotional regulation, and feel more confident managing distressing symptoms. This may be when we discuss stepping down to biweekly sessions.
Numerous factors can influence your progression toward achieving your mental health and wellness goals. Your unique needs and circumstances direct the course of each session, and part of my job is to meet you wherever you are on your journey, providing the support, guidance, and strategies to help you reach your goals.
At the beginning of therapy, I gather information as you share your story and the present challenges that prompted you to seek professional counseling. I will likely inquire about your health history, family dynamics, childhood experiences, and significant life events and transitions. From there, our conversational sessions usually begin with a check-in about your present state and any issues, insights, or experiences you’ve had since the previous meeting. You are the ship’s captain, so you determine the focus and direction–Return to our last conversation or explore something new.
You can cancel appointments up to 24 hours before your session without penalty. However, if you cancel on the day of your session or fail to show up for a session, you will be charged the full session fee.
The main thing to remember about our work together is that healing, personal growth, and therapy are not linear processes. Many variables can affect your progress and therapeutic outcome. It’s not unusual for someone to start therapy with a particular focus or goal and, due to any number of factors, such as a change in their life circumstances, loss, or an increase in self-awareness and developing insight into their problems, begin exploring something else entirely.
Counseling is usually short-term and meant to address a specific or current problem. Meanwhile, psychotherapy usually addresses long-standing issues over a more extended period.
Technical Difficulties
During our session, you or I may encounter technical difficulties that may terminate our connection without warning (i.e., a server crashing, power outages, etc.). We may need to reschedule your appointment if you or I cannot correct a poor internet connection after 15 minutes.
Confidentiality and Security
I use a HIPPA-compliant video-conferencing platform to conduct sessions, but we live in a world where online connections and information are not entirely secure. Therefore, there is a slight but real risk that an unauthorized entity could access your confidential information.
If an emergency arises during a session, I will call 9-1-1. On the New Client Information form, you will provide one emergency contact, whether a friend or family member, whom I can contact in an emergency.
