Couples Counseling in NJ
When Your Relationship Feels Strained
Even loving couples can get stuck—whether it’s the same argument on repeat, emotional distance, or conversations that become tense without warning. Maybe you find yourselves caught in familiar roles: one pursuing, the other withdrawing, or both feeling misunderstood. Sometimes there isn’t much arguing at all, just a sense that you’ve grown apart.
Couples counseling offers a supportive space to address what’s getting in the way of closeness and to create new possibilities for your relationship.
You and your partner might consider couples counseling if:
- You find yourselves having the same arguments without resolving them.
- Conversations quickly become defensive, tense, or shut down altogether.
- One of you tends to pursue while the other pulls away.
- You don’t feel as emotionally close as you once did.
- A breach of trust has changed your relationship.
- You struggle to express your needs or honor each other’s boundaries.
- A major life transition has changed the way you relate to one another.
- Individual histories or family experiences seem to be affecting your relationship.
- You want to strengthen your relationship before challenges become more deeply rooted.
The Mind-Body Connection &
Relationships
Relationship dynamics go beyond emotions—your bodies are involved, too. Stress, hurt, or misunderstanding can show up as a quickened heartbeat, tension, or shutting down. These body responses are normal, but when they become a recurring pattern, they can reinforce the cycles that leave you feeling stuck.
By noticing how each partner’s history and nervous system shape your interactions, you can start to recognize recurring dynamics and try out new ways of connecting. This opens space for more closeness and healing.
What to Expect in Sessions: A Body-Centered Relational Approach
My approach to couples counseling is active, collaborative, and focused on your goals as a couple. Early on, we’ll talk about what brings you here and what each of you hopes will be different. When I notice patterns of communication or behavior that seem to be interfering with what you want for your relationship, I’ll name them with care. My intention is to support each of you in honestly exploring how you might be contributing to, or shifting, the dynamic between you.
Sessions are more than a place to talk about the week. We’ll work directly with the challenges you’re facing—practicing new ways of communicating, exploring different responses together, and using what happens in the moment to support real change. If emotions run high or one of you withdraws, we’ll pay attention to what’s happening for each of you and use that information to help you stay connected.
Growth continues between sessions. I may invite you to try a strategy or approach a familiar conversation differently at home. We’ll revisit what you notice, talk honestly about what happened, and use your experiences to guide our next steps together.

Frequently Asked Questions:
Couples Counseling in New Jersey
Do we need to be in crisis to start couples counseling?
No. Couples come to counseling for many reasons. Some are dealing with significant conflict, betrayal, or uncertainty about their relationship. Others notice increasing distance, recurring disagreements, or patterns they want to address before they become more deeply rooted.
What if my partner is unsure about couples counseling?
It’s common for partners to come to counseling with different levels of comfort, hope, or uncertainty about the process. We can make room for those differences. Early sessions give each of you an opportunity to talk about what brings you to counseling, what concerns you may have, and what you hope might be different in your relationship.
Can couples counseling help after infidelity or a breach of trust?
Couples counseling can provide a place to address what happened and its impact on both partners. Our work may include making room for difficult emotions, understanding what each of you needs, improving communication, and exploring whether and how to rebuild trust.
What if we're not sure whether we want to stay together?
You don’t need to have that answer before beginning counseling. Therapy can give you a place to have conversations that may have become difficult to have on your own and gain greater clarity about what each of you wants and needs. My role isn’t to determine the outcome of your relationship, but to help you engage with those questions more openly and intentionally.
How long are couples counseling sessions, and what do they cost?
Couples counseling sessions are 60–90 minutes and cost $295 per session. Sessions are available in person at my Branchburg, New Jersey office and online for clients throughout New Jersey. I am an out-of-network provider and partner with Thrizer to help clients use eligible out-of-network benefits.
What happens in the first couples counseling session?
Our first session gives me an opportunity to hear from both of you about what brings you to counseling, what has been happening in your relationship, and what each of you hopes might be different. We’ll begin identifying the patterns or concerns you want to work on and talk about what you would like to accomplish together.
How do you support both partners in couples counseling?
My role isn’t to decide who is right or wrong. I’ll work to understand each partner’s experience while also paying attention to the patterns happening between you. That doesn’t mean I won’t be direct. If I notice a behavior or interaction that is getting in the way of the goals you’ve identified for your relationship, I may name it and invite us to look at it together.
